TECDC assesses the risk to Europe/EEA associated with Omicron XBB1. five sublineages

In a hazard assessment summary released today, the ecu Center for Disorder Prevention and Control (ECDC) assesses the overall level of risk to Europe/EEA

The risk is moderate to excessive for vulnerable individuals along with elderly, unvaccinated, and immunocompromised humans, who rely on their immunity against SARS-CoV-2

There are numerous knowledge gaps with XBB.1.Five and this assessment could also be shared in the coming weeks as more evidence becomes available.

Mathematical modeling via ECDC suggests that XBB1.Five should emerge as dominant within the ecu/EEA after one to two months, given the current low proportions

There are currently no signs that the severity of infection of XBB.1.5 is different from that of previously circulating sublineages of omicron

The percentage of XBB.1.5 in the ecu/EEE dropped to less than 2.5% during the last two weeks of 2022 (the most recent duration for which version proportions

The XBB1.5 sublineage is currently offered only at very low levels in the ecu/EEA, but may also become dominant in the ecu/EEA in the coming months

ECDC recommends using appropriate tests and sequences, increasing uptake of vaccination against COVID-19, and reinforcing infection prevention and control measures
