Henry Cavill says he will no longer return as Superman

DC fans around the world collectively wept Wednesday when British actor Henry Cavill

said he will not don the crimson cape as Superman within the sprawling DC Comics cinematic universe.

Fans were shocked as this came after Cavill announced in October that he would be returning as the metallic character.

Cavill even made a cameo as Superman in a mid-credits scene at the end of "Black Adam,"

 the DC movie starring Dwayne Johnson. (The CNN and DC movies are part of the corporation of equal discernment, Warner Bros. Discovery.)

Taking to Instagram, Cavill explained that he met with filmmaker James Gunn and British film producer Peter Safran

who in October were named co-chairmen and CEOs of DC Studios.

“In the end, I will not be returning as Superman,” Cavill wrote. “After receiving instructions from the studio to announce my return in October
